09 June 2010 -  Haringey Inaugural Super8

Congratulations and thank you Haringey!

To all pupils who took part in Haringey's inaugural Super8 competition on June 9th at New River Stadium - we salute your athletic endeavours.

Super8 is a new athletics format now being formally introduced by UK Athletics at school and elite level, in addition it is being piloted this year at the London Youth Games and therefore may be the format for next year, thus Haringey students now have a head start for 2011.

We at QuadKids who help deliver Super8 would like to say a big thank you to all the students for taking part with such enthusiasm and energy, and we would like to extend our gratitude to those who helped on the day, in particular the superb assistance of St Thomas Moore Young Leaders, without your help there would have been no competition.

The results:

All individual results and Super8 scores (maximum possible 100 per event) are available via Haringey's Competition Manager Nicholas Nanikhan. However special mention must go to a few athletes who treated us to fantastic individual performances on the day.

Miles Dzewa of St Thomas Moore was a stand out athlete in the Boys 100m – running 12.7 and scoring an epic 73 points, while Antonia from Greig City showed outstanding technique in the Shot – throwing 8m.04cm. While in the Girls 100m there were fast times as Mia Stead from Alexandra Park clocked 13.6 and Bobbi from Greig City clocked 13.5 to win.

The relays in particular demonstrated Haringey athletes team based desire to win, as we had a series of extremely high quality races, in particular the Boys 4 x 100m with 3 teams under the magic 60 second barrier, although the the Girls team from St Thomas Moore who ran 58.3 to win and where actually quicker than the winning boys 4 x 100m team.

However, the accolade to best performance on the day and indeed team display, with a highest score on the day of 75 points goes to St Thomas Moore and their winning mixed medley team with a time of 4minutes and 22 seconds.

In terms of team results please see below, but please bear in mind that as several schools did not have a full compliment of 8 boys & 8 girls required, their total team score has been greatly hindered. However, for our next Super8 we hope that the new format will be fully adopted and teams will joust for victory on an equal athletic footing

Team                                 Points

1. St Thomas Moore             1,710

2. Greig City Academy          1,507

3. Gladesmore                     1,136

4. Alexandra Park                823

5. Woodside                       15

Fancy being a Bolt beater?

07 June 2010 -  GCAN Quadkids Final left athletes asking when is the next Quadkids event?

On Saturday 5th June 2010 the Greater Cambridge Athletic Network (GCAN) hosted the first GCAN Quadkids Final.

The competition comprised of composite teams from local schools and junior athletic clubs including; East Cambridgeshire AC, Priory Junior School, Cambridge Community Athletic Club and Impington Community Athletic Club. The event was a fantastic opportunity for young athletes to compete in a local, fun and exciting new team-based athletic format which is supported by England Athletics.

Every athlete competed in four disciplines – throw, jump, middle distance run and a sprint. Their individual scores were combined to provide an overall team score. This year is was a very close contest between the teams but the 2010 GCAN Quadkids Final winners were Priory Junior School winning with 1754 points closely followed by East Cambridgeshire AC with 1752 points. Only two points split first and second!!! Impington Community Athletic Club finished in third position with 1154 points followed by Cambridge Community Athletic Club in fourth with 1042 points.

The event was a great success and many athletes provided spectators with some stunning performances. It is hoped the event next year will be bigger and better, so watch this space!
